SHORT DESCRIPTION

The software suite ANNA is a web-based, user-friendly quality analysis system for traffic signal controls. It makes it possible to perform regular and comprehensive system analysis that goes beyond specific, single-target checks.

Benefit

Complex traffic signal controls must meet the high expectations and standards of both road users and system operators. To prove that these standards are being met and to ensure that the control is working properly, it is necessary to perform regular and thorough checks of the control. Because of the enormous amount of data contained in these controls, until now it has only been possible to perform specific, targeted tests. ANNA, the software suite we developed to address this limitation, allows you to manage large data volumes and perform broad, system-wide analysis.

Analysis of Public Transport Journey Times

One of the most important factors in the analysis of public transport (PT) controls is journey time. ANNA analyzes journey time for PT vehicles approaching the intersection, and creates reports with easy-to-read graphs and statistical data. ANNA works with the concepts of detection points and detection chains: as PT vehicles approach and cross the intersection, they communicate with a series of check-in points, followed by a check-out point. Together these points constitute a detection chain. Journey times can be calculated for the entire chain or for travel between any two points in the chain. ANNA compares actual and planned values, and makes it easy to quickly identify discrepancies and correct the control.

Evaluation of Public Transport Detection Chains

PT detection chain analysis (see “Analysis of Public Transport Journey Times” for explanation) makes it possible to perform targeted evaluations of PT journeys. You can evaluate the reception quality of individual PT messages (priority requests) and use this information to assess the reliability of the priority control. It is also possible to group and display timetable deviations for specific intersections and time ranges. To better categorize deviations, ANNA displays every detection chain in the form of signal timing diagram log and correlates it with certain critical parameters. Many statistical functions are provided that allow you to sort and filter the data by line, route and direction.

Display of Coordination Quality

ANNA makes it easy to evaluate coordinations. Its time-distance diagrams display green bands for signal groups coordinated across multiple intersections. Planned green times can be displayed in addition to actual times, making it easy to compare the two. It can also simulate public transport journeys through the coordination to uncover any coordination-related weaknesses in PT priority controls. It automatically detects when an intersection is not in sync and displays this information in the diagram, too.

Fault Monitor

ANNA employs a monitoring system that allows it to continually compare planned and actual values for specific intersections, and thus perform targeted intersection evaluations. The system contains configuration, evaluation and notification modules. In the configuration module, you can create rules and assign them to intersections. You can also specify the cycle in which data is retrieved from the traffic computer and the time at which monitoring functions are run. Once these times are reached, the server automatically runs the functions. An overview of the results is displayed in the ANNA monitoring menu. In addition, a detailed breakdown is available in the form of a monitoring report. The notification module allows you to specify a contact person. In the event of any faults or rule violations, ANNA automatically sends a message to this person, who can then respond accordingly.

Detector Data

ANNA evaluates detector data (i.e. counts) and displays the results in easy-to-read line graphs. Traffic volume is calculated automatically based on detector occupancy times. Data from multiple detectors can be combined and reduced using a predefined coefficient. ANNA provides a number of different views to choose from. It can also create tables containing count values and export them for further processing. Any detector faults that might affect the evaluation are registered and displayed.

Signal Group Wait Times

Evaluations of traffic signal control quality are based primarily on the wait times of individual traffic streams or signal groups. ANNA makes it easy to perform these evaluations and automatically allocates detector data to signal groups. It presents the results in two forms: graphs for one or more detectors covering a user-defined time period, and a statistical analysis of traffic parameters. It can also display signal group and detector data for individual wait times in the form of a signal timing diagram.

Green and Red Time Distribution

ANNA evaluates the distribution of green time and red time (or, more accurately, “stop time”). The results are displayed in a signal timing diagram that provides a quick, clear overview of traffic conditions and control responses. It is especially difficult to estimate the effects of green and red timings in highly traffic-responsive controls. The signal timing diagram can target specific deviations or take a larger view. Signal timings can be consolidated for signal groups, or evaluated singly in a variety of views and exported.

Signal Timing Diagram Log

ANNA is able to display actual (i.e. not planned) signal indication sequences in the form of a signal timing diagram log. This view can also display all other control parameters and correlate them with specific signal groups. This includes stage sequences, detector and variable values, and public transport detection chains (see “Analysis of Public Transport Journey Times” for explanation). Visualizing these parameters makes it easy to evaluate events in the context of other, concurrent processes in the control. Defining specific "permission periods" (times during which a traffic stream can get green) and displaying them in the signal timing diagram log makes it considerably easier to find violations of control parameters. The synchronisation status is logged when switching to new signal timing plans and displayed in the diagram; this information can be used to check the reliability of the control.

Visualization of detection point sequence for PT vehicles traveling through multiple intersections. This facilitates analysis of journey times for public transport lines.
Calculation and display of schedule deviations for public transport journeys to identify problematic areas in the event of delays
